The challenge

New flooring had left the base sitting proud of an out-of-level slab, with shoe moulding doing the work of hiding a wedge-shaped gap.

Sample case study. Technique is accurate; the job specifics have not been verified against a real project. Replace with a real write-up and photography before launch.

The problem

A ten-foot ground floor with three-and-a-quarter-inch base — undersized for the ceiling height and shorter than the door casing it died into, so every opening had a visible step at the floor.

The bigger issue was fit. The slab fell close to half an inch across the main living area, and after new flooring went in, the base had been re-set with shoe moulding covering a gap that grew along its length.

The approach

Two-piece base: flat stock with a separate cap. That reaches a height that suits a ten-foot room and matches the casing properly, and because it is assembled from two components, each one can be scribed independently to whatever the floor is doing.

Base height was set against the door casing so the two intersect cleanly, rather than one stepping past the other.

Construction

The floor contour was transferred onto the bottom edge of the flat stock and cut to it, so the base sits tight along its whole length with no shoe needed. Scribing a whole floor takes real time and is most of the labour in a job like this.

Inside corners cut as a tight, stable joint; outside corners glued and pinned so they cannot creep apart.

Fastening mattered here. Slab-on-grade means masonry behind the drywall in places, which needs the right fastener rather than a longer nail — get that wrong and the base works loose inside a year.
